Poland had been under Prussian rule for 45 years by the time Albert was born in Rytel. The village belonged to the Czersk parish nestled within the Kaszubian region of Prussian-occupied Polish Pomerania. On the sandy terminal moraine soils of a long-departed glacier, Rytel’s inhabitants relied on planting, maintaining and milling timber such as pine from the nearby Tuchola forest (Bory Tucholskie).¹

Conscription into the Prussian Army was Albert Watemburg’s breaking point. A Polish man, he cut off his trigger finger to ensure he did not kill fellow Poles behind the front line in the 1870-1 Siege of Paris.
